How Rad Relish Scaled Their Operations by Clearly Articulating their Social Purpose
Led by Garrett Millsap, Rad Relish sells a unique farm-to-table zucchini relish based on a recipe by his Métis grandmother. Made from WestKelowna, BC-grown zucchini and infused with the flavours of turmeric and mustard seed, it’s one of the few Métis-owned food brands carried in major grocery chains, and offers a sustainable alternative to low-quality, big-box relish brands.
Seeking to tap into the growing market of environmentally conscious shoppers and create a new specialty food category, Rad Relish sought support building a business plan to grow their operations, expand their reach and secure investment funding. Beyond profit, their goal is to use the presence and shelf-space of their expanded line to raise awareness about Indigenous peoples and ignite meaningful conversations.
Purppl worked with Garrett and Kyla, owner and operator of Rad Relish partner company Rad Jamz to create a flexible financial model, a business plan/pitch deck, and a clearly articulated social purpose to guide the team as they scale. Coaching provided practical skills and greater confidence as the team heads out to secure the financing to expand the product line and get on grocery shelves nationwide.
Since then, Rad Relish sales have grown rapidly and are set to double in 2024, thanks in part to significant PR and radio coverage. And the social entrepreneurs’ confidence is high. “With such a meaningful social purpose and a robust pitch deck, the investments should roll in” says Garrett. “I’ve just secured a few new grants,” says Kyla. “As a new mom and entrepreneur, there’s nothing I can’t do.”

“The coaching process was amazing, learning from our coaches Julian and Selena was a game changer. Having two professionals who have been there and done this before was instrumental in preparing our pitch deck/business plan. We are now ready to secure funding and move on to next steps”
